20th March was celebrated as World Sparrow Day. House sparrows or gauraiya are about to get extinct from India which were earlier spotted easily outside our homes.
Many people do not know much about saving sparrows and many just want to work or write about glamorous species but not common species like sparrows. Sparrows are key players in the food chain. While adult Sparrows usually eat seeds and grains, they are also known to eat insects; hence they help with pest control. In fact, they even helped save New York City’s trees when they were being destroyed by green inch worms. Sparrows are an integral part of our environment and are important Bio integrates. They are a very important part of Ecosystem and in today’s time sparrows are an important link between children and nature.
The major reason behind these becoming endangered is that they have lost their homes because we humans are cutting forests for developing buildings and now when they build their nests within cracks of the buildings or small space, we throw their nests as we feel they make our place dirty. We feed pigeons and let them make nests outside our homes. Pigeon nests are a common sight in our colony too. Pigeons are the biggest threat to our health and environment. Over time, pigeons have fought with sparrows to take their space. Sparrows cannot fight with pigeons who spread Avian flu that is a cause of worry to us all. It has been reported that there are over sixty other diseases that birds and their droppings can carry.
The problem is especially worrisome in residential areas, as many of these diseases are airborne and can be transferred to humans just by being around pigeons. Diseases associated with pigeon droppings include Cryptococcosis, Histoplasmosis and Psittacosis. You can become infected with these diseases by breathing in the dust that is created when cleaning droppings. I have been working on easy, harmless and cost effective pigeon removal solution and would be happy to be of help to anyone in this regard
