How Political Parties Are Looking At Ground-Level Campaigns

With empowered and active RWA’s in Gurugram, political parties have now started looking at not just colony level, not just block level, but even lane level governance. With the Vidhan Sabha polls coming around, political parties have started to activate their party members at a colony level.

I have had the opportunity to join a political party Sangathan recently and work towards building a strong team of people for the upliftment of our A block colony welfare. I was amazed by the structured and operational functioning from the grassroots to the national level.

The party has a robust system of primary membership, where members are given basic training on the party’s ideology and values. These members are then organized into small units known as Booths, which act as the party’s primary interface with the voters.

Several Booths or Shakti Kendra as they call it, consist of Pramukh, BL2, Palak and Panna Pramukh. The karyakarta ( Panna Pramukh) at the bottom of the hierarchy is the most powerful and effective, as far as the polling station goes. In a colony, each lane has a Panna Pramukh and he is responsible for the day-to-day smooth functioning of the lane work and during election times to get those families to vote (Approx 15 families in each lane). Karyakartas are encouraged to go interact with residents and have chai chaupal etc regularly to keep the dialogue open.

Whether this form of governance is followed by other political outfits or not, this seems to be a positive change from a development point of view. Someone in your lane is concerned and is willing to come forward to help you and get your work done. That is a big achievement.

Residents should start interacting and taking part in politics. They should voice their opinions and volunteer to work. Whatever your political ideologies might be or whatever party you feel for, you must come out and be a part of this system. More importantly, we must encourage our fellow neighbours to vote. With this will come change.
