While enjoying oneself… consideration must be shown for other
For the past one and a half years, I have been contributing articles in “Samvada” focusing on many festivities and celebrations that bring us together as a community.
There is no doubt that these shared moments of joy are what make living in a high-rise truly special. However, certain recurring issues have also captured my attention that deserve wider discussion. Through this platform, I aim to respectfully present my observations in the hope that addressing them kindly and constructively can further strengthen our relationships as neighbours.
Take the issue of working hours – while renovation sites are expected to follow the stipulated schedules, work frequently continues well past the permitted hours. This unduly disturbs residents trying to rest or sleep, and often ends up creating unnecessary disputes between neighbours.
Noise pollution from late night parties and loud music is another issue faced. While enjoying oneself is every resident’s right, consideration must be shown for others needing undisturbed sleep, rest or study.
Sanitation is another sore point. Throwing garbage from windows or misusing plumbing by dumping kitchen scraps and non-degradable or keeping the trash out of the house as per one’s wish (without respecting the time it is collected) clogs drains and mars our surroundings.
Parking has become a flashpoint, with unallocated vehicles occupying residence spots or blocking entry/exit points, or driveways for hours on end. Attempts to tow improper parkers are often met with hostile confrontations. While welcoming guests is understood, following allotments protects the access rights of all inhabitants.
Strict rules and penalties alone won’t fix these issues; we must cultivate caring for our shared community. We must reflect on how our own actions might inconvenience others and resolve to do better. I appeal to all residents, regardless of age, background or personality, to please reflect on how your actions impact others within these shared walls. Only by demonstrating care, empathy and flexibility in our dealings can we truly call this amazing community our home.
