Home Chef – Part 3 – An Artist Baker – Amisha

A chance meeting with a friend who brought a home baked cake led Amisha to explore a totally new creative realm of baking. Intrigued by the softness, flavour, and beauty of the cake, she requested her friend to take her under her tutelage. This was the first baking class she had ever attended but it led her to a new journey altogether. Considering that she came from a totally different background in commerce and had worked in the garment industry as a retail executive, hers is a story of diverse interests.

Her baking journey started about five years ago after her interest was aroused. Initially, Amisha would bake cakes for family and friends which earned her a lot of appreciation. Motivated by the validation of her efforts, she explored it further learning through videos on youtube, Instagram, and facebook. Experimenting and innovating, she mastered the craft of icing and frosting too.

Her first order came from one of her friends who ordered a cake for his wife’s birthday, which led to regular orders from him. Word got around soon enough. Covid proved to be a turning point where she became a household name and she was the go-to person for almost everyone’s cake requirements as the celebrations started happening at home thanks to the lockdown. The whatsapp groups of the colony played a pivotal role in advertising her work.

Talking about her USP, she says that – she not only understands the requirement of the clients but tries to make their memories special through her cakes. One of the high points came when she baked a cake for her father in the shape of a potted plant complete with rose flowers since he is an avid gardener. The worst was one incident when accidentally a cake baked for a client fell from her hands and she had to redo it again, especially when she was faced with a paucity of time.

A multi-talented person who loves to paint and sketch and also dabbles in poetry once in a while, Amisha loves gardening and growing tomatoes and strawberries on her rooftop. A highly creative person who has always been open to learning, she learned French at the age of 40 after having two kids. She was a well-known French teacher in Gk2 before she became one of the baking sensations of the entire neighbourhood. Amisha is now famous far and wide, beyond the boundaries of our colony, thanks to Social Media. Finding immense support in her family comprising her husband and two teenage daughters, it has been a great journey that has taken her to great heights.
