We continue our journey on the road to sustainable living by seeking out inspiring residents who ‘Eat Right!’. Our food is a big determinant of not just good health but also of resources we consume. In our quest to tread lightly, we must make the right food choices.
Through the eye of sustainability only, a food product that consumes less resources like water & fertilizer and produces less emissions is the right choice, making plant-based diets and native grains winners. Our Hamlet has a few Vegan champions and many Millet crusaders.
Rahil (12244) has been a vegan for more than a decade due to his compassion towards animals. He champions the cause & points out helpful resources to begin a vegan journey. Vegan Society’s VeGuide App has recipes & information; if you, like me, are a desi, try Veganuary, localised resources and inspiration on a platter.
Another way to ensure our food does not impact our ecosystem adversely is to replace wheat and rice with native grains like millets. Millets are popular in AOH! My query scouting for millet eaters garnered more than a score ‘Ayes’ and almost 50 add-me-to-the-millet-group interests!
I regret our short column can’t do justice to all the wonderful millet eaters.
Sabia (T7) has done the unimaginable; not only are the adults pro-millet, but by trying recipes like Ragi Oats Banana Dates Chocolate Cake, she has turned her two little ones into millet-fans. This family recommends Café Lota and Fab Café as good places to eat out.
Ishneet (14114) grew up eating millets in Maharashtra; Bhakri continues to be her favourite.
Raviesha has steered her family towards sustainable eating by adopting a variety of flours & flavours like Amaranth & Sweet potato.
Nidhi (11223) & Sandhya are newly – minted millet eaters and are already seeing benefits.
Jayshree & Swatika embellish their millets with delicious curries and chutneys.
A lot of folks like Boski (10112) & Geetanjali (12GF2) are firmly in the came-here-for-gluten-free-staying-here-for-nutritional-powerhouse camp. If you behold any and all of our vegan & millet heroes glowing faces and power – packed workouts, you would be cooking plant – based and native too!
