History of Veer Baal Diwas

Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, in 17th century  wanted to consolidate his rule, which led to,  according to many accounts, forced conversions to Islam. Pandits from Kashmir approached Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, ninth Guru of Sikhs for help. Guruji is said to have taken a stand against such oppression and sacrificed himself along with three of his disciples.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji became the tenth Guru of Sikhs when he started armed struggle against religious cruelty and fought many battles.

In one of the battles Guruji’s younger sons Baba Zorawar Singh ji and Baba Fateh Singh ji with their grandmother Mata Gujar Kaur ji got separated and were captured by the Mughal Governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan. He offered to spare their lives if they accepted Islam.

When the young sahibzadas denied he got them bricked alive in the wall. When the wall collapsed, they were executed.

According to Indian Express, Baba Zorawar Singh was 9 years and Baba Fateh Singh was 7 years of age, when they sacrificed their lives. To honour their martyrdom, Veer Baal Diwas is celebrated on 26th of December every year.

This year too, children of Gurugram sang hymns, recited poems and enacted role play at Gurudwara Sadh Sangat, South City I; to honour the courage and sacrifice of Chhotte Sahibzadas.
