In the recently held MCD elections, the contest for the post of councillor in the Vasant Vihar constituency was mainly between two contenders: Himani Jain of Aam Aadmi Party and
Raj Rani of Bhartiya Janta Party. In the close contest Himani Jain emerged victorious and will be the first women councillor of Vasant Vihar.
Himani Jain is a B Com graduate from Delhi University and BEd degree holder. She is an active social worker. During pandemic, she along with her husband Abhishek Jain provided 24/7 free ambulance service and vaccination facilities for the residents of Vasant Vihar and the adjoining areas and is continuing to do so.
In the run up to the elections, Himani had said that if she is elected as councillor, she will ensure better living conditions in Vasant Vihar being herself a resident of the colony and fully aware of the problems being faced by the residents. Installation of CCTV cameras, boom barriers, waste management, traffic control during school hours, water harvesting are some of the areas which she intends to tackle on priority.
Challenges before the new councillor are many and on the other hand, expectation of the residents from the councillor being the member of their own fraternity is high. Moreover, there are several power centres at the block level and individual groups within the colony having their own local problems to be resolved. Tackling each group and individual individually will be a tough task.
A joint effort by VVWA, councillor and the residents is essential to translate the aspirations of the residents into reality.
