We Need to Hold MCD’s Hand in Keeping our Beautiful, Clean & Green Colony Remain So
We, the residents of Defence Colony of New Delhi, are role models, not only to our house help staff, the construction workers, tradesmen like electricians and plumbers etc, but also to other colonies in Delhi that wish to achieve a similar level of cleanliness and the greenery, the hallmark of Defence Colony.
Although Defence Colony is one of the poshest colonies of New Delhi, there are a few Issues, that I wish to highlight that need each resident’s attention AND action.
1. Daily household garbage found strewn around.
2. There are kind-hearted persons who feed milk to cats and dogs. These are served in plastic plates which after they are empty are lying around and invariably fly into the rainwater drains and eventually block drainage of water.
3. Some of us believe it is good for us to feed birds. Similar situation as with cats and dogs arises as this is done in public areas.
4. Dogs’ pooh on the road side and on the Central Park.
These issues need to be tackled seriously by each one of us and on immediate basis. We need to hold MCD’s hand in keeping our beautiful, clean and green colony remain so.
I have a few suggestions-
A. Designated garbage collection vehicle visits each house daily to collect the garbage that is in two bags, pre-segregated by the residents into biodegradable garbage (kitchen food, vegetable peelings etc) and non-biodegradable (plastic, polyethene bags etc). This Service Is Free. You only need to be prepared when the vehicle arrives at your house.
(RWA Is Requested to Define Some Block Timings for Each Street in Coordination with the Garbage Collectors)
B. Cats and dogs be fed at designated places. Cats and dogs are well-versed with every nook of the colony and they will adapt with alacrity to the new order. Plastic is a grave environment hazard and on top of it, as these plates are not re-used, this adds to monumental waste and this is non-degradable. The plastic plates be collected by the person who has placed them an hour from the designated places after first placing these filled with milk. These must be reused repeatedly.
(RWA Is Requested to Place Bilingual Signages Like “No Littering” Or “Say No to Plastics”)
C. A request to those who need to feed birds. Please feed them within the confines of your house, on your roof top. The place can be cleaned by your cleaner staff after the birds have eaten.
D. Under the solid waste management by-laws 2018, which have been notified by the Delhi Govt., which states that littering by pet animals is prohibited under Section 13 (1). The responsibility to promptly scoop/clean up litter created by the pet in public space lies with the owner. Read more at:

In a consideration to fellow citizens and towards keeping the colony clean and green all we as pet owners need to do is buy a poop scoop (available at Amazon for about Rs 400), use it while we are walking our pets or instruct the dog walker to do so.
