‘Har Fikr Ko Dhuyen Me Udata Chala Gaya… Magar Neighbour Ko Mat Uda Do’

Har fikr ko dhuen me udata chala gaya, but have we forgotten our responsibilities?

Living in multi-storey apartments can often expose residents to a variety of uncivilized behaviors, both intentional and unintentional. Those situated on upper floors may not fully grasp the implications of their actions, leading to a range of unpleasant experiences for their neighbors below. Common issues arise when residents discard waste items such as cigarette butts, chewing tobacco, or even leftover food from their balconies without considering the consequences. For instance, there have been alarming cases where burnt cigarette butts were carelessly thrown over the edge, landing on patio furniture below. Such negligence poses a serious fire hazard, endangering lives and property. Similarly, it’s not uncommon for someone to discard chewing tobacco saliva from their balcony, resulting in unsightly stains on clothes left to dry on neighboring units. This disrespectful act not only spoils personal belongings but can also create tension and discomfort among residents. Moreover, the act of washing balconies or watering plants is often carried out without any thought for those who live on lower floors. Excess water can drip down, ruining laundry that is hung to dry or creating a nuisance for residents below. Many have voiced concerns after finding items like sindhur or kneaded dough on their balconies, leading to whispers of witchcraft or other supernatural explanations, reflecting the frustration and confusion that can arise from such thoughtless behaviors. The reasons behind such negative actions can vary widely. Many individuals simply lack an understanding of, or regard for, the community living ethos necessary in multi-storey settings. This lack of awareness can result in harmful behaviour towards neighbours. A failure to take responsibility for waste disposal can stem from poor habits or upbringing. Some residents may feel unaccountable for the mess they create, believing it is someone else’s burden to manage. Additionally, a fundamental disregard for neighbours’ spaces and property can lead to troublesome actions, like littering in common areas or neglecting basic courtesies. Limited awareness of how littering and waste disposal affect the environment and the community’s well-being can lead to a cycle of disregard for proper habits. Furthermore, stress or mental health struggles can manifest in various behaviors, including a lack of consideration for others, causing some individuals to act out in harmful ways. To address these issues, it is essential for the Apartment Owners Association (AOA) or management to take proactive steps. Organizing workshops and informative sessions on proper waste disposal and the impact of littering can cultivate a greater sense of civic responsibility among residents. Implementing effective waste management solutions, such as designated bins and regular cleanup initiatives, can significantly reduce litter. Introducing fines for littering or misconduct can serve as a deterrent against such behaviours, encouraging residents to think twice before acting carelessly. Encouraging residents to participate in community clean-up days or awareness programs can foster a sense of camaraderie and collective responsibility. Finally, establishing specific areas for smoking can help prevent cigarette butts from becoming a common issue, protecting both the environment and residents’ comfort. Through these collective efforts, it is possible to cultivate a respectful, clean, and harmonious living environment in multi-storey apartments. By promoting communal values and accountability, residents can contribute to a more positive atmosphere, benefitting everyone in the community.
