As always, this auspicious day, which fell on 27th November this year, was preceded by a Prabhat Pheri, where a contingent of men, women and children under took a march early in the morning. Starting from Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha GK-2, the contingent went around the colony singing Shabads, accompanied by tabla. The march ended back at the Gurdwara. I had the occasion to attend the Prabhat Pheri this year along with Roop, my wife. K R Mangalam World School GK2, requested the contingent for a stopover for a kirtan session at the school because of the devotion of its principal, Madam Jyoti Gupta. The dawn ambience was celestial and it was a very spiritually uplifting experience for the devotees.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith was born on this blessed day. It was said of him that “The light of Nanak has come, dissipating the darkness that has enveloped the world”. Revered by all, his preaching reflected merely his desire to rid society and religion of some of the vices which had crept into them. GK2 celebrated this auspicious day in the Gurdwaras with full fervour. Early in the morning, Roop, my wife, prepared the kada prasad and kheer to take to the gurdwara for distribution to the “sangat” (devotees). We listened to the Kirtani Jatha which had come from Jalandhar. Following this, a small group of young girls sang the kirtan, accompanied by the harmonium, tabla and rabab.
After the kirtan, we partook of the langar in the langar hall, where mats had been spread out on the floor for the participants to sit. Enthusiastic volunteers served the Sangat cheerfully. The meal was a simple one consisting of Dal, Roti, Paneer & kheer, but the glory of the langar is such that all other feasts fade in comparison. A humbling experience for me was seeing devotees bringing sacks of Atta, sugar, vegetables and cauldrons of Dal on a rickshaw. In addition to this, scores of people had brought eatables like samosas, pakoras, fruits and so on, for distribution to the poor as well as the devotees.
Towards the evening on the day of Gurpurab there were light to moderate showers of rain, and our kids were worried that it may not be possible to light the candles at the gurdwara. But nature was very kind and the rain let up towards the late evening, allowing us to visit the gurdwara, to place the lit candles. The Gurdwara looked resplendent in the radiance of its illumination.
