Gulmohar Centre Celebrates Founders’ Day

Gulmohar Sports-cum-Community Centre celebrated its Founders’ Day on October 6 at the Centre where members and their families got together to enjoy an evening of Ghazals and evergreen classic numbers. The Centre also laid out a delicious and elaborate fare from its kitchen for the members to relish.

The Centre invited Gurbir Singh, a versatile and trained singer from Chandigarh, to perform. His deep understanding of Indian classical ragas was on display as his renditions of ghazals of maestros like Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh left the audience spellbound. A mechanical engineer by profession, Gurbir Singh is a singer by passion. His soothing and mellifluous voice added an extra edge to his accomplished renditions of timeless classics from the world of ghazals.

He obliged the members’ requests to resume his performance even after the dinner. His rendition of Rafi Sahab, Talat Mahmood and Hemant Kumar’s evergreen Bollywood numbers evoked much appreciation from the audience. He managed the audios, keyboards and synchronized three apps all by himself while singing and described himself as a “one man army’’ immersed in the ocean of music.

The Centre also honoured 31 founder members who had worked hard decades ago to set up Gulmohar Park and the Centre which has taken a place of pride among the socio-cultural and sports hubs of the Capital. The President of the Centre Manpreet Singh Choudhary presented shawls and stoles to the founder-members as a token of respect to honour their contribution towards the development of the Centre and Gulmohar Park, the first journalists’ colony in the national Capital.
