Good Samaritans of AOH

As the temperatures around the Indian sub-continent have soared, with Delhi-NCR setting a new record of around 50 degrees, it is but natural for the government to issue advisories to stay indoors.

For us, we can afford to; if at all we have to move out, we do so in AC cars. However, many do not have that advantage and have to brave the elements in their effort to perform their duties – all our guards, at the towers and gates; our housekeepers; our gardeners; and all our support staff.

In this extremely hot weather, they have to work in the lobbies/ outdoors, where we can barely stand for a few minutes.

While many of us have been sympathetic and given them cold drinks and water to keep hydrated, a bunch of our residents decided to put together a collective and structured effort.

Led by Sandhya Chaturvedi (11121), Babli Khurana (11122) and Renuka Deshpande (3122), a group of residents collected contributions from wiling residents and decided to distribute some snacks and cold drinks to all of our support staff.

They started the exercise with the first lot of distribution to the day and night staff. Many other residents volunteered to help as well. After this, the ladies went and purchased earthen pots and glasses, which have been given to each tower guard and at the gates.

This has made the staff happy as they at least get cool water, which is naturally filtered, rather than keeping it in plastic bottles. The group, with about 42 members, plus additional contributors, is continuing to work together as they keep getting funds.

Every few days, they organise a distribution drive for all the staff, both day and night, and make sure to distribute the things themselves.

There is a group of residents that have taken up the cause of trying to arrange coolers for all the towers and gates as well. Other residents have also looked at distributing snacks, while another group had distributed sugarcane juice as well.

It is wonderful to see residents come together for the larger benefit of people – kudos to their effort!
