Despite a blanket ban on mining by the Supreme Court in 2009, Residents of South City 1 are doing just that. If this statement is shocking then let me tell you that these law-abiding Citizens are mining for gold; Black Gold, commonly known as compost.
There are a few of us who are engaged in this activity within our own premises, but other more enterprising people have started community composting within their lanes. Anita Khanna (D 92) has already harvested compost from her promising initiative. J & K Block had been composting their wet waste but now they are in the process of building a new cemented composting chamber.
The latest to join the eco-friendly bandwagon of natural composting is the lane of I-8 to I-47.
Surbhi Pahuja (I-32) invited me over in April this year to address the Residents regarding the essentials of handling their kitchen and horticulture waste. I found the gathering to be very attentive, lively and interactive. Soon they had formed a Committee for composting and now their compost pit is up and running. There are bound to be some roadblocks, but nothing that cannot be overcome.
The bottom line is that what we shall overcome is the guilt of not doing anything to save our children and future generations. Make no mistake, the Earth does not need saving. It is millions of years old and it will survive all that we have inflicted on it. So, fellow residents let us put together what is mine and yours (wet waste) and let us mine Black Gold.
