I have been in GK 2 for more than 48 years. I have seen the days when there were very few houses, most of them under construction and very few inhabited. Even basic require-ments and groceries were not available. There was hardly any mode of public transport. Buses were plying only on the main road occasionally and walking was the only option into the colony. The cycle was an easily available source. Two-wheelers were owned by most residents. Very few cars were plying. We always kept our fingers crossed lest we may fall sick there was a need for medical facilities as there were none. But people had good immunity and enjoyed the pollution-free atmosphere.
Can we imagine life without cabs, mobile phones, cars, or public transport with practically no medical facility? Did we enjoy it? Oh! Yes, it was wonderfully serene and peaceful. The few residents or owners of the houses around made efforts to know and help each other, neighbours used to walk down the road and visit each other’s place often. One didn’t need to make appointments to meet their friends. The sense of community and belonging was high.
Change is inevitable. That old GK2 also has had its share. With lots of inhabitants and hardly any vacant plots, constructions are going vertically in both directions. That is the only option. Seems the difficult phase has passed; the struggling period is over. After a very long time, our GK 2 is looking so lively and blooming with life. We have marched into the present era with better facilities, markets, neighbourhood shops, schools, doctors, and hospitals in our vicinity. People are in their comfort zone, enjoying their cars even for going to the colony market or parks. Now, parking is a great issue.
When I look back on my journey in GK 2, I find so many memorable incidents. I came in as a school student and have grown old living here. Seen many people entering and exiting my life. I have loving memories as well as saddening incidents. Did I enjoy this life or that? Today we live a modern life where we are constantly running, comparing ourselves to others, and staying busy with multiple activities, social media, and get-togethers, all in an environment full of all kinds of pollution and risk of so many diseases and viruses. We are talking about sustainable living, natural living, chemical-free/ herbal/ organic fertilizers, and natural/organic farming but do we have any time to stand and enjoy our wonderful world and see what we have done to it?
What do you have to say? What are your thoughts? If you have any ideas that we could execute at a colony level, it would be nice if we could share them here. We could all work together to make our GK 2 a better place to live in once again.
