Red Team wins with overwhelming majority
The hallmark of democracy is choice. When we vote, we choose who shall lead us. Our choice reflects our hopes and expectations, as well as the vision of our leaders. Typically, every leader makes grand promises and tries to win us over with his or her passion and commitment. Typically again, most promises remain just that, promises. Vision remains a distant reality. Passion dies down. And so do our hopes and expectations.
But with every election, this cycle is renewed. This is also the beauty of democracy, and that’s why new people come with new vigour, while the experienced people come with more maturity. Ultimately, it boils down to the voters choice, who they trust more.
Recently greater kailash 2 witnessed RWA elections, fought with a lot of hard work, energy, zeal, and dare I say emotions that sometimes went out of control. Nevertheless, both teams had something to offer, something unique. Although both teams had a similar vision of clean green and safe gk2, their strengths to achieve the same were different.
While one team professed trust, experience and past performance, the other team countered with the need for change, lack of faith and opportunity for others to also showcase their abilities. Ultimately, the residents decided to go with experience and showed satisfaction with the performance of the incumbent team.
At the end of it, whoever may have won or lost, the true winner was democracy, as were the residents of the colony. There was unprecedented voting this time, and while one team got an overwhelming majority, the performance of other team was also credible. Perchance this could be a reflection of some discontent, a signal that while the incumbent may have won, they need to be more responsive to the needs of the residents, and perform better.
Most importantly, this time the kudos to the election committee who conducted these elections extremely smoothly and transparently. Special care to senior citizens, as well as provision of water and refreshments by all concerned ensured that there were no hiccups. When every citizen is able to exercise his or her right to vote freely and without inconvenience, that is in essence the actual victory of democracy.
Lastly, it is often said that why have elections? Why not have the best people of all teams combine and lead? Although the thought is good, it defeats the very purpose of democracy, which is choice. Different people have different ideas, different vision, different ways of functioning. By ensuring free and fair elections, the voters get to choose their leaders, rather than having them thrust on themselves.
It would be fair to end by saying that though these elections were hard-fought, and many a times the emotions and tempers ran high, it is prudent to remember we are all residents living in the same colony, facing similar issues. While raising issues is fine and indeed essential, personal attacks and character assassination must be discouraged at all costs.
