In the pursuit of making a meaningful contribution to society, a group of dynamic and compassionate senior ladies from Sector 15A came together to make a difference.
For half a decade now, the “SILAI SCHOOL” has been providing valuable skills to domestic workers and young girls, giving wings to their aspirations to master the art of drafting and tailoring. With some very creative use of resources that are available all around us, they have built a sewing school housed in Kusum Chadha’s H.no.88. The school has been put together with sponsorship from the Singer Company, which generously provided 11 sewing machines, the Rotary Club, which has extended support to offer Diploma and Advanced Diplomas to the women, facilitated by a highly-skilled instructor.
Adding to the work at the Silai School, academic classes were established a couple of years ago, catering to students from grades 1 to 10. Organised in 2 groups – juniors and seniors, each group has a dedicated teacher supported by the involvement of several benevolent women and young students from the Sector who volunteer their time and expertise to teach a wide array of subjects. These classes are conducted for one hour each evening, five days a week. This educational initiative operates under the umbrella of Mahavir International Urvija Vira Centre, Delhi/NCR, led by Swati Sharma, a resident of the Sector.
And this effort is bearing fruit in many ways. Sheela, one of the learners, has now become a paid instructor at the school. Shalini found employment at Mr Thukral’s hosiery export company.
Another wonderful story is about a group of dedicated women, known as the “Morning Walkers,” who offer computer education to underprivileged young girls in the Sector. This school is housed in H.no.214. This one too built on available resources. The computers were generously donated by residents, Sunil Singh, working at HCL Tech, helped to teach the young students and now boys from Class 8 onwards have joined the girls. Sunil Sir, as he is affectionately known, doesn’t just teach technical skills but teaches spoken and written communication, and effective presentation skills too.
6 girls have got jobs at VLCC and Bela is now employed as an instructor there!
Joining Sunil Sir are Alka, Lakshmi and Madhu Gupta, along with Ms Shobha Juneja, Kusum Chadha and Girdhari Rajpal who have offered their premises for these activities. Neelam Suri and Manjula Jain help supervise these operations.
This dedicated group doesn’t need any money to support their activities but would love to have volunteers who can teach some art, craft or skill to this enthusiastic bunch.
