We at the upper echelon of society tend to assume that government projects are only for lesser privileged community and fail to understand that some of these are equally important and applicable to everyone in the population

The government of India has introduced Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) a campaign launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals to provide quality medicines at affordable prices to the masses.

PMBJP stores have been set up to provide generic drugs, which are available at lesser prices but are equivalent in quality and efficacy as expensive branded drugs.

Mission

  • Create awareness among public regarding generic medicines.
  • Create demand for generic medicines through medical practioners.
  • Create awareness through education and awareness program that high price need not be synonymous with high quality.
  • Provide all the commonly used generic medicines covering all the therapeutic groups.
  • Provide all the related health care products too under the scheme.

Vision

To bring down the healthcare budget of every citizen of India through providing Quality generic Medicines at Affordable Prices.

To ensure high quality, medicines are procured from WHO Good manufacturing practice (GMP), Current Good Manufacturing Practice and CPSUs manufacturers for supplying to public

Each batch of drugs procured is tested random at BPPI’s empanelled National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) accredited laboratories thereby ensuring quality, safety and efficacy of medicines and conformance with required standards

What are generic drugs?

A generic drug is a medication created to be the same as an already marketed brand-name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics, and intended use.

These similarities help to demonstrate bioequivalence, which means that a generic medicine works in the same way and provides the same clinical benefit as the brand-name medicine. In other words, you can take a generic medicine as an equal substitute for its brand-name counterpart.

Benefits Of Generic Medicines You Must Know

A generic medicine is manufactured to be the same as a medicine that has already been authorised. It contains the same active ingredients as the originator, non-generic medicine. However, the name of the generic medicine, its appearance and its packaging can be different from those of the non-generic medicine.

Advantages of generic medicines

Generic medicine can be used for several health conditions. Listed below are some of the pros and cons of generic medicines:

Price benefits

Generic medicines are more affordable than non-generic medicines. You can save money significantly by purchasing generic medicines. These medicines are priced low because, unlike non-generic medicines, they do not have to redo the clinical trials of the active ingredient. Generic medicines are made with the same contents as non-generic medicines, which are already authorised and approved. Generic medicine manufacturers rarely spend money on advertising and marketing, which is another important way they keep their costs down.
