Ganapati Bappa Morya: The Spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi in Delhi-NCR

Come Ganesh Chaturthi, and the air is filled with the joyous chants of “Ganapati Bappa Morya” as devotees across the city come together to celebrate.

Once a festival largely confined to Maharashtra, it has now found its way into the heart of Delhi and the NCR region in a big way. This 10-day celebration brings together communities with its vibrant mix of devotion, music, and cultural activities. Local potters’ markets buzz with activity as families seek the perfect idol of Lord Ganesha to bring home. The sight of people carrying their chosen Bappa amidst the sounds of traditional band baja, followed by the ceremonial *sthapana* at their homes, adds a magical touch to the festive atmosphere. Morning and evening prayers are offered, accompanied by prasad and devotional bhajans that fill homes with divine energy. Ladies gather in each other’s homes to sing *bhajans*, strengthening the bonds of friendship and unity in their neighborhoods. Devotees also flock to local temples and grand pandals to offer prayers and seek blessings from Lord Ganesha. One of the key attractions during this time is the famous Vinayak Temple in Sarojini Nagar and the Dilli Haat, where thousands of devotees from far-off places come for *darshan*. Ganesh Chaturthi in Delhi-NCR is not just about devotion; it’s about spreading love and unity. The festival teaches important life lessons, especially during the grand *visarjan* (immersion) ceremony, which symbolizes letting go. Just as we bid farewell to Bappa, we are reminded to let go of negative emotions like greed, jealousy, and animosity, and embrace others with love, care, and compassion. This beautiful festival continues to grow in Delhi-NCR, bringing people together and spreading joy, peace, and devotion across all communities.
