From FOMO to JOMO

We all know what FOMO is. It is the acronym for Fear Of Missing Out. This the feeling of fearing that you are not fully in the loop of your friends and acquaintances, and they all are doing something which you are missing out; because of this fear making efforts for keeping up, staying up-to-date with whatever is the trend around – Who is doing what, trying to be in multiple Groups to stay connected and feel worthwhile and important, and in the process not being able to find time to pursue what you think important or which gives you meaning.

JOMO is JOY OF MISSING OUT. JOMO is the opposite of FOMO. JOMO is intentionally choosing what to keep and what to give. JOMO is choosing to ignore the non-essential and being NOT interested in keeping up with others. JOMO is framing the moment to keep the big picture dream in focus. JOMO is staying within and disconnecting for self-care.

You know that blissful feeling you get from staying home, snuggled up with a book or listening to your favourite music or pursuing your hobbies and missing out on all that seemingly fun stuff everyone is posting on social media?

A feeling of contentment with one’s own pursuits and activities, without worry over the possibility of missing out on what others may be doing. THAT IS JOMO!!

You will know you are in JOMO when you: Stop looking every minute on your mobile. Stop checking frequently the social media posts of friends. Stop binge watching TV series because your friends have done it. Stop going to parties where the main idea is boozing and dancing. Stop being with people who are a waste of your time – just to be nice.

I am in this journey from FOMO to JOMO and suddenly I have lots of time to do what I wanted to do, to read books, make some good music, learn some new musical instrument, spend more time with family and a few close real friends.

For those in FOMO, I just wish to say that don’t let your FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) delay your Goals of Life. Embrace JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out) and follow your dreams and aspirations and achieve those Goals that will give you happiness and meaning in life.

When FOMO turns to JOMO we will know that we have lived a full life.
