Fire in IGL Pipe Line-S 415 Back Lane

A Major Accident Was Averted by a Vigilant Resident Deepa

A major accident was averted with the timely detection of a fire in the rear back lane behind S 415, GK-1 by a vigilant resident.

It was around 4am on 8 Dec when Ms. Deepa (S 415) noticed flames leaping out from behind her house. As reported, she immediately rang up Fire brigade & IGL. Luckily the IGL team reached within a few minutes, equipped with fire extinguishers and doused the fire.

By the time fire brigade came, situation was under control.

However, there are two big questions that arise out of this situation:

1. It is understood that some maintenance work was done by some agency behind S 415 the previous day and some digging was done, which perhaps resulted in the damage of this high-pressure pipe line. Did the agency doing this digging inform IGL or RWA before digging or was it an illegal operation???

2. Looking at the picture, it is clear that the flames were too close to the several a/c units, installed illegally in the back lane (By the way there are hundreds of such cases in S Block). Had the compressor of the unit caught fire and exploded, there would have been a major disaster. Why such blatant violations by builders and why MCD is a moot spectator? I, as the President of RWA has reported several such cases to the building dept. of MCD and other officials over the past two years but no action has been taken by MCD to curb such violations!

Would they wake up only when an accident happens?

I have also taken up the matter with the South Delhi in charge of IGL and requested him to investigate the reasons for this particular incident & possible measures to avoid such incidents in future. He has assured me that investigations are being done and results would be shared. Details are still awaited.
