Tons of Horticulture waste in the green belts surrounding South City is a disaster waiting to happen. As the temperatures approached 50 degrees in NCR, such collections of Waste are prone to accidents like fire.
This is exactly what happened when a fire broke out on 13th June in the green belt adjacent to D Block near K R Mangalam School.
One alert resident posted on the local group and a few regulars (Sagar, Seema Menon, Pavneet, Kush and a few others) swung into action immediately. Many residents called the fire Departments and Sagar ensured that SCRWA team was informed. Before the fire brigade could arrive, Arjun and Aakash from the SCRWA team reached the spot, took fire extinguishers from K R Mangalam School and were able to douse the fire.
It was a quick response by residents on this occasion as the entire episode lasted just 20 minutes and the fire was put out within 20 minutes of its first report.
This incident just underscores the following points
• Heaps of horticulture waste lying in and around the colony are potential time-bombs
• Lack of Security and Maintenance at the colony level is being “penny wise and pound foolish”
• Colony WhatsApp is bigger than Emergency services
PS: Overheard in the Park next weekend, the fire was not big because it was not Friday the 13th but Thursday the 13th.
