“Express Oh!! – Simi Sahnan in Conversation with Baani Bhushan

Baani: Good evening, ma’am! It’s been ages since we last met at your Independence Day show organized by you at Select City Walk. I remember strutting on the runway that day hahaha.

Simi: I remember that from 2015! It’s great catching up with you as a teenager and getting your pov on topics. Have you been following the political scene in America? Kamala Harris has recently gained positive attention for her feminist stance.

Baani: Yes, definitely! The ‘brat’ movement has turned Kamala Harris into a badass feminist icon, much like how Elle Woods managed to bring her unique sense of fashion and self-image into the often-staid world of law.

Simi: Agreed, I’m intrigued by how well-informed you are about current world topics. Tell me more about your passions.

Baani: I love writing and reading poetry—right now, I’m into Sylvia Plath’s works. Singing and dancing have been my passions since I was four, and I’ve studied Indian classical music for eight years. I also enjoy crafts, online designing, editing etc.

Simi: In your opinion, how does the internet impact mental health?

Baani: Cyberbullying is an underestimated issue. The anonymity online leads to cruel comments that deeply affect victims, leaving them with self-doubt, while perpetrators often face no consequences.

Simi: I concur, mental health is important, counselling and therapy should definitely be normalised for all age groups. Also, given the prominence of online friendships, do you think kids interact more in real life?

Baani: Yes, a hundred percent. GenZ struggles with making friends because they’re used to being isolated. The essence of friendship seems to be getting lost online.

Simi: And what do ‘real-life friends’ do together these days, especially in GK2?

Baani: It’s odd. GK2 has become a food market where people order, drink, and gossip. Kids are turning into buddhi aunties too quickly. We need community spaces like a club or a pool to foster real connections.

Simi: What events should we organize in GK2 to help kids bond?

Baani: There should be events like skateboarding parks, spray-painting workshops, poetry showcases, theatre and cultural events or even dance performances.

Simi: That’s lit! It’s been wonderful talking with you. What would you like to leave our audience with?

Baani: Ma’am, I’ve enjoyed this catch-up session so much! Parents might label GenZ as lazy or uncultured, but we’re evolving and have a lot to offer. Our generation is full of positive energy and creativity.

Simi: I understand where you’re coming from, and I think your insights have helped me come up with great new ideas for GK2. It’s been great having you here!
