Dandiya or Dandiya Rass is a vibrant folk dance and festival from Gujarat, India. It’s an integral part of the Navaratri celebrations, honouring Goddess Durga. It commemorates the deity’s triumph over Mahishasura, and symbolises the victory of good over evil, feminine power, harvest season and community bonding. During the Navaratri’s nine days, devotees gather to perform this dance and seek her blessings.
So, our society hosted a dandiya night, on 07 October, which was full of joy and festivities. ATS 2 central lawn was transformed into a vibrant spectacle… beautifully decorated, had stalls full of mouth-watering delicacies and the people in pretty, colorful clothes!
The program started at 6:30 pm. There were diverse performances by groups of all ages, from tiny tots to energetic seniors. The evening was electrified by spectacular lighting, creating a concert-like ambience that was perfectly synchronised with the pulsating rhythms.
Every member of the society, no matter what age, took a step forward to join others in the dances that took place. There were renditions, which beautifully illustrated the triumph of dancing in the dandiya night. The energy soared as talented members of our very own society took to the console, spinning infectious beats that got everyone grooving. With music flowing, the crowd was entranced, surrendering to the rhythm as the ground transformed into a dynamic dance floor.
The gathering showed the vibrant energy and bond of the community. The members of the society also joined hands in making a place to pray to the heavenly Gods. The dancers with tired feet and sweaty brows, after a long night of energetic dandiya, gorged on amazing pav-bhaji, spring rolls, chole-bhature and a lot more, to regain energy.
The dandiya night ended on a high note with everyone leaving with full stomachs and happy hearts. Memories were forged with every spin, every clap and every triumphant cry of “ Ae Hallo!” This dandiya night in ATS2 would forever be etched in our memories — a testament to the power of community, culture and celebration!!
