Yoga – derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, which means ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’ – is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science that focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. In the yogic lore, Shiva is seen as the first yogi or Adiyogi, and the first Guru of Adi Guru. Several thousand years ago, on the banks of the lake Kantisarovar in the Himalayas, Adiyogi poured his profound knowledge into the legendary Saptarishis or “seven sages’’. The sages carried this powerful yogic science to different parts of the world, including Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa and South America. However, it was in India that the yogic system found its fullest expression. Agastya, the Saptarishi who travelled across the Indian subcontinent, crafted this culture around a core yogic way of life.
Recognizing its universal appeal, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. This year marked the 10th International Day of Yoga with the theme “Yoga for Self and Society.” Yoga, a transformative practice, represents the harmony of mind and body, the balance between thought and action, and the unity of restraint and fulfillment in accordance with established customs.

Breathing techniques promote greater mind-body connection, improving the function of body and mind. Focusing on controlled movement and breathing prepares the body and mind for meditation, with an approach to a quiet mind that allows silence and relief from everyday stress. When practiced regularly, yoga can become a powerful and sophisticated discipline for achieving physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
“Yoga is not about touching your toes, it’s about what you learn on your way down.”
