Encroachments on Roads

Encroachments on the Pavements Meant For Pedestrians Is Not Right

Roadside vendors are those people who migrate to cities, to make a living. Unfortunately, when they are not able to make ends meet, they sometimes start working out of makeshift stalls, on the roadsides, to make a living. These are the people, who encroach the footpaths of the main roads.

Some areas in Vasant Vihar are swarming with these kiosks and thelas on the road side. Stuff ranging from fruits, vegetables, flowers, small toys to small eateries is working out of these makeshift shops. Residents are happy to pull up their cars alongside the fruitwala, to pick up their daily needs. It’s convenient, faster and easier.

So what does one do about these encroachments? Should they stay or go? It’s like two sides of a coin, convenient for some but inconvenient for some. The eateries are an easy solution for people, who want to have a quick and reasonable meal; during their short lunch break the fruit vendors are easy for housewives on the go.

All seems good BUT encroachment on the pavements, meant for pedestrians, is also not the right thing. There is no place for pedestrians to walk, they are forced to wriggle their way in and out and often, they are forced to walk on the busy road, dodging vehicles.

On some roads, there are flower vendors, eateries, fruit vendors, ice cream thelas and many more! The road running towards the community centre has juicewala, chaiwala, paanwala, cobbler and florist to name a few!

These encroachments need to be relocated, so that that colony has a neater look and the pedestrians, can walk peacefully on a busy road.
