As the world comes together on 21 June to observe International Yoga Day, we recognize the profound impact this ancient practice has on our physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Originating thousands of years ago in the Indian subcontinent, yoga has evolved into a global phenomenon, transcending cultural boundaries and enriching the lives of people across the globe. In recent years, the popularity of yoga has soared worldwide, as more and more people have incorporated this holistic discipline into their daily lives. The United Nations officially recognized 21 June as International Yoga Day in 2014, with the aim of raising awareness about the invaluable benefits of yoga – from improving physical flexibility and strength to reducing stress and anxiety, and even enhancing overall well-being and spiritual awakening.
Last year, our Eldeco Utopia society proudly registered with the Bhartiya Yog Sansthan, becoming a center for free yoga classes open to the community. These morning sessions, which start at 6:30 am, are led by Sudha Sharma – a trained yoga teacher from the Yog Sansthan. This year, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, around 30 residents gathered in the children’s play area to collectively celebrate the unifying power of yoga, while many others performed yoga at their homes or in local yoga studios. Though we were not all in the same physical space, yoga connected us all. The cool morning breeze added to the tranquil atmosphere as we moved through the asanas, and breathing exercises.
“Yoga is not a religion. It is a science, science of well-being, science of youthfulness, science of integrating body, mind and soul.”
