Embracing Pre-Loved Clothing With Initiatives Like Slim Home

Last month I heard about an initiative where clothes / household articles were being upcycled. Being a die-hard environmentalist I visited them and was pleasantly surprised about the quality and variety of stuff for sale and at super Rock Bottom rates! I managed to buy super stuff with less guilt.

Both Millennials and Generation Z are embracing the concept of purchasing pre-loved clothing. Re -commerce, which is the selling of previously owned items through online marketplaces to buyers who reuse, recycle or resell them, is being looked at with a vastly different perspective now that the world is aware of the disastrous impact of the fashion industry on the environment.

‘Slim Homes’ is an eco-friendly initiative by Dr Savita Nagpal, hit upon the idea of minimising consumption of resources by encouraging people to de-clutter their homes of objects, including clothes, linen, books, bric-a- brac etc, so that they may be used by others. Slim Homes facilitates this by accepting donated items which are then sold at throwaway prices. In doing so, the pre-loved items get new, happy owners, and clothes and artefacts get reused, thus mitigating resource consumption.

This whole exercise also serves to sensitise people to the idea of reuse and conservation of resources. The money generated through the ‘Slim Homes’ Sales, is pumped into projects that serve to protect the Environment. These include plantation Drives, Solid Waste Management, water conservation, and efforts at minimising the use of Single Use Plastics like disposable crockery and plastic carry bags.

This ideology is the need of the day and more and more people need to adopt and promote it for the well-being of the Planet as we don’t have an alternative for it !! Let’s join in and make the tribe grow.
