Game, set, and match! And the winner is….. This was heard over and over again as the Grand Sports Meet got going at the Gulmohar Centre a couple of weeks ago. A hundred and ten eager paricipants from 8 to 70 years of age participated in an atmosphere of friendly rivalry and pitted their skills against one another, with friends and family cheering loudly from the side lines. The action was flagged off with Tennis matches in the 18-35 category saw a high level action with no quarter given. Eventually, Nikhil Verma emerged victorious, edging out a valiant Aryan Kapoor. Then the skies opened and made it impossible to hold more matches either in Tennis or any of the other outdoor sports because of the unusually wet conditions.
Indoor sports such as Chess, Carrom and Table Tennis then shared the spotlight. In Chess, Praveen Upadhyay and Atul Bal matched move for move in the Seniors category and the former took the top spot. In the Juniors category, Vivaan Singhal won the final match, Aarav Jain coming in second. In Carrom, Kushagra Arora won the Junior Singles title, Ayush Joshi giving him a tough fight. Sanjeev Kumar and Praveen Upadhyay prevailed over Ajay Sharma and Sanjeev Bhandari. In Table Tennis, Kushagra Arora was the winner in the Junior Singles category, with Sanvi Gupta coming in second. Kunal Das and Kushagra Arora won the Junior Doubles crown, with Aviraj Singh and Shrujal Kumar in runner up place. In Pool, Sanjeev Kumar was the winner, Vivaan Singhal the runner up and Kushagra came in third.
Rain has put things on hold for the time being, but one will see action return with Cricket, Football, Tennis, Badminton, Swimming and Athletics taking center stage soon. The anticipation and excitement is palpable, and the sports meet is sure to live up to its ‘ Grand’ title.
As we all know, the excitement never stops at the Gulmohar Centre when it comes to events, and the Grand Sports Meet is yet another great example.
