by Vidisha Chakraborty, Grade 6 student (802, Aster 7; Supertech Emerald Court)
It was a late afternoon on Monday, 29 August, and I was returning home from my cousin’s house eager to see what was awaiting me after the enormous demolition of the twin towers that once stood between ATS and Supertech. I was completely excited and anxious to see what happened after the huge destruction that can be seen once and not again.
I came into my society, Supertech Emerald Court, and after seeing what happened to the place itself, I was sure that my house was ok. I knew that my house was in place as I had taken all the precautions of covering the balconies except for one. Hoping I was correct, I entered my place where it always felt like home and to my surprise everything was as clean as before. But the other balcony had a little amount of dust, but inside the house there was no dust in sight. I was scared to see what happened to the plants, but I was relieved to see that nothing happened to my building and the others.
Our society had stood as strong as a soldier, to protect our hopes. I walked outside to see what happened and saw dust everywhere; people were cleaning it with water. I went to the place where I always go to play, the playground, to see that everything was covered in white. I recorded the mountain of rocks that had been gathered after the destruction and it was so tall to see. It was a rare and memorable moment in sight that might have happened once in a lifetime.
But then I thought of what happened to some of the creatures that were left behind like birds. I knew that the stray dogs were taken by the animal welfare and were safe, but what about the pigeons and the small chirping swallow birds. I also realized that some of the birds were not to be seen.
I have written a poem about the Twin Towers and how I felt about it, I was extremely excited while writing it. I talked about the buildings with my friends at school on Tuesday. I would likely want a park for different sports to be made in place of the gigantic pile of rocks.
On Wednesday, 31 August we had a grand Ganpati arti to thank the God Ganeshji for the demolition work to go smoothly. Because of the rain, the white puffy dust had been washed away and I am also thankful for that. For the first time there was more air and people near the building were able to see light through the empty place where the illegal towers stood for several years.
