Piles of dry leaves are seen all over the colony these days. Repeated calls and messages to pick them up, have fallen on deaf ears. Residents have been warned of any untoward incident that can arise if the dry leaves catch fire…. And sadly, it came true one night. On the night of 9th May, the dead end of lane L15 and lane L32 which forms a corner and is fenced from MG Road, supposed to be the green belt area was the accident spot. Around 10.45 pm the security and QRT received a call that the dry leaves were on fire. The team reached the spot in no time, but the fire was huge and could not be controlled so the Fire Brigade was summoned. Police and Fire Brigade were at the spot trying to control the fire, but soon they had to summon a second fire tender.
Thankfully no cars were parked at that time else many cars are seen parked at that spot daily. No damage was reported, but the main cause of worry is why leave the matter for so long that gives rise to such a situation. No one could answer how the leaves caught fire. With many small shops over the fence, it could be an accidental matchstick, or a smoker just flipping his matchstick or cigarette. cause can be any. What is more important is to keep the surroundings clear and clean.
The fire was so huge that smoke could be seen even in the morning when people went for a morning walk. It was still a cause of worry as the breeze could aggravate the fire again.
Sarvadeep Sachdev from M1/52 wrote a message on behalf of co-residents of M1 urging the authorities to clear the huge pile of dry leaves and trees on M block & Gulmohar Marg dead-end, it’s an Inferno waiting to happen. So far nothing has been cleared.
