A startling case of theft by a domestic help recruited recently has thrown open a ring of organised crime active in high-end residential areas such as New Friends Colony and Maharani Bagh.
The incident took place last month when a resident of New Friends Colony employed domestic help, Rakesh (his picture is shared), through a trusted source on February 12. Even after proper verification of documents, Rakesh is accused of stealing a huge amount of money from the employer’s almirah on February 16 or 17.
The theft came to light when the homeowner discovered the missing amount and initiated an extensive search of the house and staff quarters, though nothing surfaced initially. It was only during a second search the next day that the stolen pouch was recovered — but without the money.
Suspecting Rakesh’s hand, the owner cleverly took him to the nearby police station on a pretext. After questioning him for hours, police were able to get a confession. Rakesh confessed to having stolen the money and revealed that he had immediately handed it over to his cousin, Parmod, who is employed in A Block of New Friends Colony.
It was later found through further inquiry that Rakesh was not acting alone, as his cousin Parmod and his brother-in-law, Harish, were also involved. It is believed that all three of them used false names and worked in the region.
The employer did not even press charges despite the gravity of the offense, as they said they wanted to avoid the hassle of long-drawn-out court proceedings based on the accused persons’ family histories.
Residents are being advised to make a thorough background check and remain vigilant while employing domestic staff, even from well-known sources.
