We all need essential resources like air and water 24/7. Similarly, we require a continuous electricity supply. Not only in our homes and offices but also good street lighting for safety and security. However, it’s alarming to notice street lights remaining on during broad daylight, wasting a precious resource. Conversely, darkness prevails at night due to the absence or delay in turning on the street lights, when it is necessary to have the illumination.
Who is responsible for this faulty play of things? The person in charge forgets or delays switching on and off the lights, leading to unnecessary energy consumption. This sheer wastage of a precious resource is hampering our country’s development. The lights are all LEDs nowadays which consume less electricity compared to the earlier days but still a huge wastage of a national resource.
To address this the BSES should:
1. Implement an efficient timer-regulated system to operate street lights, ensuring they’re on during darkness and off during daylight as per the seasonal requirements.
2. Consider converting as many street lights to solar-powered LEDs, harnessing daytime energy for nighttime illumination.
3. Encourage the citizens to inform the department and report any such wastage/non-functioning lights. And then take prompt action towards it.
Let’s prioritize conservation and sustainability. Small steps today will propel our nation’s growth tomorrow. Be aware, take action, and make a difference!
