The recent lift incident in Paras Tierea society, in Sector 137 has left the Noida residents high and dry. An elderly woman lost her life due to the faulty elevator. An FIR was registered against eight persons, including the four members of the Apartment Owners’ Association (AOA).
The death of the 73-year-old woman is unfortunate. The lift she boarded shot up to the 25th floor, which caused its wire to snap. The woman then remained trap in it for quite some time after being badly injured. Though eight people have been held accountable for the incident, the loss of life is irreparable. The heart wrenching tragedy has sent a chill down the spine of the residents of all the high rises.
With the rise in the number of high rises, the elevators have become indispensable. The incidents related to the lifts are not a one-of incident. There have been a number of such instances where the residents either get stuck inside them for hours or experience a free fall due to malfunctioning of lifts. Lifts need maintenance. The guards of the society should be well trained to rescue people from the lifts in case of emergencies. Every passenger lift should have an audiovisual alarm system to alert the security/maintenance staff for assistance. The inter-comm system should be functioning at all the times to alert the guards in case of any mishappening. Whenever any kind of maintenance has to be done, the residents should be informed beforehand.
The safety of the inhabitants should never be compromised. The wear and tear of the cables should be immediately addressed. The RWAs also have to play a vital role in ensuring that the lift maintenance is outsourced to authorised people.
