As far as I can remember, the rhythm of dance has been a constant in my life; maybe much before I was born! When I was a little girl, I joined Bollywood dance classes but that did not satisfy me!
The natural instinct to move with the rhythm of music was there but I was not aware of the immense value and power of dance, especially the classical dance forms.
My fascination for Kathak started when my mother enrolled me in online Kathak classes during the Corona lockdown. I learnt some of the basics in my online classes but there was still a long way to go!
That opportunity came when I was mesmerized by the elegant and graceful dance choreographed by Ranjana Ma’am during the Janmashtami celebrations.
I was so inspired by her performance that I joined her offline classes. Ranjana Ma’am took me under her wing! I was in complete awe of her dancing skills, the grace and fluidity of her movements and her choreography.
Soon, Kathak became more than a hobby; it became a part of me!
I began devoting more time to Kathak to perfect my techniques. My Guru, a venerable Kathak dancer, was not just an instructor but a guiding light on my Kathak journey.
With her guidance, I discovered the finer details of Kathak and fell in love with this classical dance form.
Learning Kathak has its own share of challenges: complex rhythmic patterns, maintaining graceful posture and focused practice requires a lot of dedication, but after every performance, the applause by the audience is a moment of profound satisfaction and a testament to all your hard work.
I aspire to continue perfecting this art which, to me, is now a lifelong commitment and a journey of self-discovery, cultural exploration and artistic expressions. I have learnt the power of storytelling through movements.
I strongly recommend this dance form that celebrates history, tradition and the art of storytelling, to all: for grace, agility, fitness and discipline.
