Construction Activities and the GRAP

Compelling need for strict implementation to control air pollution

The October month of festivities is over. All are now coming back to routine and preparing for the coming winter days. This is that time of the year, as winter approaches, when toxic air envelops NCR which has been a regular feature happening for several years due to a combination of many factors. The condition worsens post-Diwali. The dust-laden air becomes heavy as the temperature starts falling. The smoke from the industries and the burning of crop residue in the neighbouirng states gets trapped in the cool air. The construction activities also add to this woe.

In our neighbourhood, the construction activities of a shopping complex and a hospital have been a constant source of anxiety for the F block, Sector-50, specifically the societies facing both the sites. These societies have been facing such forced circumstances since many years. Earlier the construction work in 70x section, across the road, generated noise and dust. However, the current construction of the shopping complex has raised several issues.

The deteriorated AQI is affecting the health of even an average healthy person, not to mention those with ailments and little children and elders. The dust-laden air has led to health issues like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Some families residing on this side of the sector are reported to have shifted out from this area. But this is not possible for most.

The contractors of the construction sites have followed the basic norm by shielding the area, but other restrictions are not strictly followed. Some activities are disturbing and restrict the movement on the road that passes in front of the societies.

The welfare bodies of the sector as well as the society RWAs have taken up the issues here from time to time. But not much has been done or can be done. The common residents are at the receiving end of the issues of concern, the foremost of which is the smoky polluted air.

Residents want their appeal to reach the Noida Authority’s concern administrative departments to see that measures like, regular sprinkling of water on site and road leading to it, covering of the cement and sand, work to stop at fixed time, etc. are strictly implemented.

Collective efforts by the people and administration can keep the condition under control.
