Living in the green environs of Suncity is truly a bliss, beautiful trees all around add to nature’s bounty. Sanskrit shloka below emphasizes the importance of trees beyond their aesthetic value ‘‘वायूनां शोधकाः वृक्षाः रोगाणामपहारकाः। तस्माद् रोपणमेतेषां रक्षणं च हितावहम्।।’’
Trees purify the air and help drive away diseases. Therefore, the planting and protection of trees is beneficial for living beings. If you too share the same sentiment and want to have nature’s beauty right at your doorstep, you can grow your plants in your gardens and balconies.
Just as any other living being these gifts of nature require nurturing and nourishment. The nourishment for your plants can come very easily by composting your kitchen waste in the following simple steps Material Required: A) Earthen pot with a lid B) Kitchen waste: 1) Vegetable peels except lemon 2) Fruit peels including bananas except citrus fruits 3) Used tea leaves washed 4) Kitchen Scissors C) garden soil D) diluted sour curd/yoghurt
Steps to follow: 1. Take an earthen pot and put a base of dry leaves or garden soil enough the cover the surface 2. Put the roughly chopped kitchen waste (non-citrus) on top. Spread it evenly in the pot. 3. Cover the waste with a layer of garden soil (or previously made compost) 4. Take 2-3 tbsp of diluted sour curd and sprinkle it over the soil 5. Cover the pot with the lid and keep it aside 6. Repeat steps 2-5 till the pot is filled. 7. Now just leave the pot untouched for 2 months. (The time period is variable according to local temperature, generally, it takes up to 90 days) 8. See whether the compost is ready by touching it and feeling it with your hands, it should be crumbly and not wet. If it is wet add some more dry garden soil to it. 9. Empty the pot and can get the coarse compost which you can seive to get fine powder 10. The leftover dry waste can further be used as a base/layer for the next round of composting Use your homemade compost for providing nutrients for your plants and welcome pretty blooms in your garden.
Composting at home not only ensures healthy plants with vibrant flowers, it is a small step towards sustainability and saving the earth.
