Community Participation for the Environment

The record-breaking heat this summer has stirred up all. People were aware that such a situation will soon arise, with the concretization of the city beyond limits; and it’s now arrived! Residents participated on World Environment Day with sincerity, and are doing their bit on other days too.

For a Greener, Healthier Planet

The Reebok Running Squad (RRS) in Noida is not just about staying fit and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow runners; it’s also about giving back to the community and the environment. Urvashi Anand has been the force behind this fitness regime for thousands of Noida residents. RRS team conducted a plantation drive on World Environment Day, 05 June.

The team members planted saplings in the park. It is a heart-warming example of how sports communities can contribute to environmental sustainability.

A Tree Saved

Few weeks ago, on 9 May night, strong winds and heavy rain resulted in uprooting of a young Neem tree. The tree must be about 7–8 years old and had grown to good size but could not bear its own weight and had fallen by. The next day some casual workers from the park contractor, assigned by horticulture department, came and shaved the trunk of all the leaves to make it light. They were planning to dispose of the tree from here.

However, all this activity caught the attention of some tree lovers and they thought of saving the tree by planning for its revival. They stopped the workers from carrying away the fallen tree and explained the procedure to save the tree. Accordingly, the tree was again set upright with the support of wooden poles; some organic fertilizer was spread in the roots and topped up with soil.

Since the roots of the tree are deep, even though the tree had fallen, there was hope because the roots were still intact and had not completely decapitated. Thus, with the help of tree lovers from our neighbourhood, and their timely intervention, the Neem tree could finally be saved. With monsoon round the corner, it is hoped that once the rains are benevolent, we would be lucky to see fresh leaves on the tree.
