Children of Def Col Have Been Learning Importance of Sikh Culture

Birth of Lil Khalsa

Dr. Preeti Ahuja and Ekta are the heart and soul behind the birth of Lil Khalsa. For years they have dedicatedly worked very hard and trained so many children of the colony to do religious activities in the C Block Gurudwara Sahib. So how did they start this journey, and what message do they have to share … let’s find out.

For over 25 years, children from Defence Colony and surrounding areas have been learning Punjabi, Kirtan, and Sakhis—ethical value-based stories of the Guru’s times and the importance of Sikh culture—under the guidance of Dr. Preeti Ahuja. Even during summer holidays, Punjabi classes were conducted for one and a half months, where Gurmukhi was taught along with fun activities as a way to learn Sikh culture.

Dedicated teachers were hired, and competitions were organized to motivate students. The children were given platforms to perform at esteemed venues like Chelmsford Club and India International Centre. These opportunities not only honed their cultural skills but also instilled confidence and helped them overcome stage fright.

When COVID-19 restrictions began, classes shifted online and continued every Sunday under the name “Little Khalsas.” This online platform allowed more people, including grandparents and siblings, to benefit from the classes. The approach focused on teaching through fun ways, encouraging children to ask questions and develop a sense of pride in their heritage.

Under Dr. Preeti Ahuja’s leadership, the Gurudwara gave importance to youngsters, allowing them to take center stage. Activities conducted by Rajni Kandhari and Ekta Ahuja promoted youth engagement. They are proud of the children and their families, who have encouraged them to develop strong roots in their culture.

Dr. Preeti and Ekta extend their heartfelt gratitude to the management of the Gurudwara, who, despite changes over time, have consistently supported the youth.

We also thank Dr. Preeti Ahuja and Ekta, whose tireless efforts have inspired countless children. The children lovingly call her “Preeti Aunty,” and we hope that she will continue to inspire and nurture young minds. Her selfless work is a beacon of hope, reminding us that Sikhism is a path of love, inclusivity, and compassion, embracing humanity in all its diversity.
