The central park of M Block Market, Greater Kailash-1, the prestigious market of South Delhi is in shambles. The park which is expected to be used by visitors to the market to relax in between shopping rounds and allow children to play while ladies are shopping is poorly maintained. The park has a couple of garbage drums that overflow and smell. The park is full of garbage, waste paper, wrappers, polythene bags, etc. flying all over the place. The jhulas, slides, and other play activities meant for children are full of dust and filthy preventing use. Benches and Gajibo sitting areas in the park are covered with dust and not worthy of sitting. People need to carry a duster if they have to sit on these benches. One can find garbage, construction materials, and construction waste dumped by shopkeepers at many places in the park. Dust and dry leaves all over indicate that sweeping is not done regularly in the park to give it a fresh look. The fountain is nonfunctional and has stagnant water, a source of mosquito breeding.
People responsible for the maintenance of the central park seem to have no interest as they do not appreciate the importance of a good ambience to attract and retain visitors/ customers by providing an attractive and clean environment around the shops. Proper maintenance of the park will allow customers to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Traders association could rope in and get support from corporates to maintain and take care of the upkeep of the M block market Central Park as done by some other markets. Well-maintained Central Park will attract more visitors to the market, enhancing footfall and boosting the business of the shopkeepers.
