Diwali is the festival of lights. It signifies the winning of good over evil. It is usually celebrated with a big puja, diyas and, most importantly for the youth, crackers. I could go on and on about why crackers are harmful to the environment and why we should not burn them for a multitude of reasons, but, honestly, burning crackers is fun and a core memory for many children growing up.
Burning crackers is something many parents and kids do not want to give up anytime soon. But what can be done is to not turn these good memories with family into a nightmare for yourself and others. To prevent this, parents should teach their kids how to burn crackers responsibly and explain to them the consequences of what happens when things go wrong. After all, fear is a very good way to help understand the gravity of the issue.
This Diwali, all over Noida, there were as many as 68 fires with 17 coming from Highrise societies. This does not even include the accidents and bodily harm caused by rockets misfiring or NAZI bombs being thrown at cars.
While Diwali is a fun festival, where even I sometimes do stupid things that put me in jeopardy, it is important to understand that we are playing with explosives no matter how flashy or weak they are. The next time you go out on Diwali, maybe consider that firing rockets from your hands is not cool nor is burning nazi bombs in your hands and chucking them.
All these crackers can be burnt a lot more carefully. While I do agree that a little bit of the thrill goes away, the trade-off is definitely worth it.
