Care for Strays: Bhutan’s Inspiring Journey

In an effort spanning 14 years, Bhutan undertook a remarkable sterilization and vaccination programme for stray dogs, achieving an incredible 100% success rate. This achievement was made possible through a united effort of the community, volunteers and the government collaborating in a consistent, compassionate and humane manner.

To address the ongoing challenges of animal–human conflict and create a sustainable solution, the focus must now shift to consistently conducting high-quality spaying/neutering, implementing microchipping for all pet dogs, and ensuring comprehensive vaccination programmes with robust follow-ups. It’s crucial to recognize that treating strays in a humane way is not just about animal welfare; it also plays a vital role in preventing issues like dog bites that can impact our community.

What Was Done/Needs to Be Done: Community involvement and awareness in establishing veterinary clinics in districts is vital, coupled with generating awareness about the project among the masses for everyone to get involved in creating a positive change.

Strategic Phases for the Right Impact:

Phase 1: Launch a pilot project with the support of NGOs and the government. Conduct a census of strays, train veterinarians and volunteers, and create awareness in the community.

Phase 2: Take the success nationwide, ensuring every corner benefits from these efforts.

Phase 3: Focus on community engagement, emphasizing the importance of high-quality spaying/neutering. Encourage community members to bring in their dogs for sterilization and vaccination.

Phase 4: The ultimate goal is 100% coverage, backed by fully government-funded initiatives.

Critical Considerations for Success: To ensure the success of this transformative initiative, we need: (1) A clear roadmap for our journey. (2) Effective mobilization of resources. (3) Continuous follow-up with transparency. (4) Strong community engagement; it’s a collective effort. (5) A commitment to animal welfare over mere numbers. (6) Larger districts providing necessary infrastructure for smaller locations. (7) The unwavering support and commitment of administrative bodies, driven by government backing. (8) Acknowledging the legal protection provided to animals, advocating for their voiceless needs.

By approaching this challenge with compassion and a shared commitment, we can positively impact both our community’s development and the quality of life for every citizen. It’s a call to join hands and champion the cause of those who rely on our support for a brighter future together.
