Jaypee Institute of Information Technology students were on their way to the college campus to attend an event on Friday, 28 February evening. Lots of them were travelling in their personal vehicles when one over speeding car lost control after crossing a barricade and swerved onto the division near the entry gate of towers 4, 5 and 6 of Kalypso Court.
The incident occurred around 4:25 PM, when there were commuters present in the area. I called the police to ascertain the causes since quite a few youngsters were under alcohol influence. The same was confirmed by other residents passing through the institute area, which was jam packed with students.
The side airbags of the car had opened, leading to no serious injuries to the occupants. No one in the vicinity was injured, however, lives would have been jeopardized, by looking at the vehicle condition at the accident site.
There was no intervention from the security staff hired by Jaypee. Even when the event was ongoing, there was security lack around the college or near the residential areas.
The college and the township management need to collaborate in the future. Actions need to be taken against traffic violators by the township committee; the college management must enforce disciplinary norms in their campus.
The college lies in the midst of a residential complex; the sanctity of the same needs to be maintained.
The institute image is also at stake. The students’ behaviour, post the accident, is in stark contrast to the values otherwise preached by the college. Swearing, smoking in the middle of the road, and urinating on the outer walls of residential towers is unpleasant.
The residents feel helpless as the security is lackadaisical in its approach; the buck is passed on to the next superior in the channel.
Hopefully, this incident will serve as a revelation needed to make this township a safe space for everyone.
