Building Go-Green As A Value

Humankind has done enough to abuse nature and nature is slowly but surely hitting back. Be it the freak weather, global warming, floods, forest fires, or earth quakes and tsunamis, you name it, and we are witness to it. These have given rise to multiple initiatives to protect the environment. A genre of these initiatives comes under Go-Green where the objective is to reduce, reuse and recycle waste or to simply conserve/reclaim natural resources. In our colony too, we are focusing on waste segregation and rainwater harvesting and the latest is an announcement of stopping sending paper bills to club members effective 1 st August. This specific action requires a comprehensive ‘change management’ plan to assimilate this new way of working amongst the club members, of changing habits through education, communication and appreciation. But this also brought up an important question of the investment we are making to build Go-Greenor environmental conservation as a value amongst children of an impressionable age. Whilst we will leave the nation’s plan to its politicians, bureaucrats and functionaries, it is nice to see some local efforts underway in our own colony.

One of them is Windows the Art and Craft Corner (www.facebook.com/winartcraft), a studio run by Renuka, a product of College of Art and NID. Whilst most such set-ups focus on building skills in the field of art, Windows goes a step further by building strong values that include a respect for sustainability and environment, among others. We recently came across an endeavor by the kids at Windows, of using Amazon packaging to create interesting items of utility. It was really heartening to see this creative and path breaking effort which would go a long way in building Go-Green as a value amongst children, who will shape the thinking of future generations. We hope to see more such efforts in our colony with collaborative efforts between the Society and set-ups like Windows, to nurture these values in children from a young age.
