Suhail discussed the evolving landscape of book marketing, highlighting a significant shift in the publishing industry. Previously, publishers would sign contracts based solely on script approval. Now, authors must also present their work to the Publisher’s marketing and research teams.
Suhail shared a personal anecdote, recounting a meeting with a prominent Publisher seeking publication of a cookery book of a famous TV chef. Despite the chef’s reputation, the publisher checked online and discovered the author’s following was only 16,000. The publisher remarked, ‘We require a minimum following of 100,000 to ensure viable book sales.’
This anecdote illustrates the increasing importance of an author’s online presence and marketability in the publishing industry.
