Being Vegan – A Trend or Reality?

If we have to define veganism in layperson terms, it simply means plant – based food. Diet inclusions are nuts, seeds, fermented/ sprouted plant – based foods, fruits and vegetables. The perfect replacement to dairy is almond/ soya milk.

A decade ago, veganism was adopted only if there were medical reasons. There was less awareness on what this is about, leave alone sustainability. However, now people comprehend the term itself and switch to it for more reasons like being planet – friendly or being healthy in the right way.

Veganism is a choice people are ready to make between dumping junk, eating balanced or consuming only purity. It is becoming a lifestyle and a great futuristic profession too.

One of my clients who runs an event management firm, Vipin Panwar affirms that it is now feasible to find vegan – friendly cafes and restaurants in India. “There is more cultural acceptance.” The hindrance comes in because we rely heavily on dairy products.

However, if we leave aside the challenges of controlling our senses, the benefits like weight management, high nutrition, stronger hearts and immunity boosters can take us a long way. Being healthy and energized is Vipin’s motivation!

Vineet Khunger, an IIM pass out managing his own startup says that being vegan, or at least reducing animal consumption, is putting an effort to step away from the cycle of cruelty towards animals. Animals are intelligent and loving creatures deserving a full life.

Vineet admits he is not fully vegan but aims to get 98% there. Supplementing protein, Vitamin D3, and Vitamin B12 is needed. “It is doable as these supplements are easily available.” Plant proteins have become good now – delicious and healthy!

Vineet is convinced that, in 10 years, veganism will not be seen as something to be mocked. The idea is to make a plant – based diet richer than to find substitutes. “India is anyway blessed with plenty of vegetable options.”

Let us define a day’s menu for someone who wants to experiment with veganism –

Breakfast – Oats Porridge in almond/ coconut/ soy milk

Morning Snack – A fruit smoothie, combined with omega 3 in any form and green leaves.

Lunch – Chickpeas with brown rice, Pumpkin Beetroot Potato cutlets.

Evening Snack – Black Coffee, Sweet Potato

Dinner – Soups, Salads, Veggies, Quinoa

The variety is huge and up to your creativity!
