For long, the corner of the S Block lane connecting KR Mangalam School and the Sanatan Dharam Mandir near the rear gate of the temple complex has been used as a waste dumping
ground. The garbage dump would attract anti-social elements from the nearby areas which was becoming a security hazard for the residents living in the vicinity of this spot. I undertook a few measures under the aegis of GK-2WA to clean up this mess.
These included getting the Safai Karamcharis to clean up this area every day and to get the Authorities to pick up the waste from there once every two to three days. Not just this, efforts were also made to go door to door urging residents not to throw their household trash there. Even though this was a formidable task, these efforts have eventually paid off. The area is not just a lot cleaner now; even the security guards and the Mandir Authorities have been sensitized against discarding any trash at that spot.
Cleaning up this trash hill was just one part of this entire exercise. The next and equally daunting task was to beautify this corner to obviate its usage as a trash disposal spot again. For this, a small landscaped garden has been created there using soil and heavy stones brought by me from the nearby areas. I engaged some local gardener to plant saplings in that corner. This is where the residents of the lane were helpful too as they provided water through hose from their homes for the saplings. Having seen the emergence of a beautiful landscaped mini garden in place of the trash hill, the residents have now taken it upon themselves to maintain that area. We hope our efforts in sprucing up this eyesore bear fruits for a long time to come.
