Everyone is suffering because of soaring temperatures and we have now crossed record-breaking temperatures. In these times when we are all struggling, I feel, in adversity changes can be made. Right? In my office we have a group called Sustainability Ninjas. We try to bring change and also do regular activities to sensitise and save the environment.
In that regards, we recently had a meeting with Ecosia, a German Co. Last year I heard about this company which invests its revenue (which is generated through their search engine) in reforestation. As it seemed to be too good to be true, I forgot about it. Meeting a representative of the company recently and hearing about their work and understanding their limitations with searches was quite eye opening. While it uses Bing’s search technology, it still does not match Google in terms of real-time information or search depth. However, the company’s mission is to support reforestation and it makes an ethical and environmentally conscious alternative! What a timely find, I say!
It allocates a portion of its profits to planting trees around the world.
The company is transparent about its efforts, providing detailed reports on their website about revenue generated from ads and how much is used for tree planting. If you are keen on privacy, then: All searches on this search engine are encrypted, ensuring search security.
The search engine does not use third-party tracking tools, respecting data privacy. Searches made here become anonymized after one week.
Its settings menu is simple and easy to navigate.
Ecosia is a worthwhile alternative to Google and Bing for those who value environmental impact. They are also supporting reforestation projects in India. You will find it on their webpage. Interestingly, when I started reading more about it I found that their founder, Christian Kroll, on his trip to India had a major shift and found inspiration from here to start his journey for an environmental-conscious alternative to the popular searching platform.
