At PanchShila Montessori School, we not only focus teaching the curriculum but also inculcate the feeling of togetherness by celebrating an array of festivals. The festival of Baisakhi was cel
ebrated with equal zeal. The children came dressed in traditional Indian clothes and brought home cooked poori and aloo. They were served halwa cooked in pure ghee in the school. The day was planned with activities pertaining to Baisakhi. First the teacher narrated the significance of Baisakhi and how it is the end of harvest season and that the farmers celebrate to make the end of the season. Then we explained them the journey of the crop i.e. wheat from the field to the table. We showed them the process of growing, harvesting, grinding and finally kneading into a dough to make chapattis. The process began 2 weeks ago where the children were made to sow seeds, then the wheat stock grew. They were also narrated a story of ‘The Little Red Hen’ where the red hen has to bake bread and asks other animals to help her and how she manages on her own from cutting the crop to kneading. The children were shown a chakki and wheat grains, wheat flour and finally wheat dough. The day came to end with celebration where the kids danced to some bhangra tunes.
