Backlanes – A Perennial Mess

We ourselves are the culprits!

A question that keeps resonating among all residents of the colony is that despite being an affluent and up-market colony, why does GK-2 seems so dirty. Even if we forget the perpetual sewage issue and the overflowing drains, it is actually the filth in the form of solid waste that seems omnipresent.

Election after election, the promise of cleaner and greener GK-2 continues to be just that, a promise. Concentrating specifically on the back lanes, the successive RWAs have been at it for years. While over the years they have certainly improved, the improvement on ground is so insignificant that one wonders whether clean back lanes are ever going to be a reality.

Certainly, whenever the RWA and concerned authorities clean them, one can see the stark difference. But just a few days later, the situation seems back to square one. The reasons are manifold. The builders continue to flout rules and use back lanes as their personal fiefdom, dumping all kinds of construction waste with absolute impunity. Then some residents also find it convenient to dump their waste in the back lanes without care and concern for others. More horribly, the laborers, workers and even employees of the market area use this area to relieve themselves, answering nature’s call as if its their right.

The question that begs asking is who is responsible for the filth in the back lanes, and the answer is a resounding “we ourselves”. Why are we dumping our household waste in the back lanes? Why are we letting these builders get away with continuous misuse of the back lanes? And why are we tolerating the people who use these back lanes for answering nature’s call so blatantly?

Lastly, the RWA seems to be spending a huge chunk of the money on cleaning these back lanes. If the causes for the back lanes to become filthy are not being addressed, isn’t all the money, time and effort going down the drain? And in such a scenario, is such spending justified?
