Recently, a resident of N Block, Panchshila Park was walking in Arun Jaitley Park at around 5.00 pm. Since it is winter, lot of people go for a walk in the afternoon. She was walking with her headphones on. A young man appeared from nowhere and attacked her. He tried to strangulate her and she passed out for 30 seconds. Finally on regaining consciousness, she screamed and fortunately a young boy who was running on the trail intervened. But the attacker ran off with her headphones and her phones. Had someone not intervened, God knows what would have happened!! She was shaken but mustered up her courage and went to the Hauz Khas Police Station to lodge an FIR.The resident has been following it up diligently. The police visited the site where the unfortunate incident happened. There are lonely patches in the park/forest and the walls on the sides are broken and the absence of grills make it even more dangerous. There are no lights or CCTV cameras inside. Either these lonely patches should be cordoned off for the public or the park should be fortified. The resident added that there have been two cases of chain snatching in September in the park which proves that security should be beefed up. The 40 acres of the forest/park has 5 guards with three rotations so in all 15 which is a very small number to patrol the vast forest. They do not even have weapons for self protection or to protect others. After the incident, there are now two/three plainclothes policemen on patrol. The walls are under the jurisdiction of the ASI and hence the matter has to be taken up with the concerned authority. Not only that, we should even take it up with the local MLA to impress upon him the danger lurking in what we call a boon for walkers. The park has lovely flora and fauna and the residents have had lovely sightings of peacocks, parakeets and different species of birds too. Let us not give it away to the drug abusers and loafers. We, as residents, must take initiative along with the local authorities for making the park safe. There are several senior citizens also not only of our colony but neighbouring areas who come there for walks and exercises. The matter should be taken up seriously.
